Doc Tour 2018 is a one-day event organised by the Documentary Filmmakers Association (DFA) of South Africa in collaboration with Encounters South African International Documentary Festival aimed at young professionals and emerging filmmakers developing projects for the first time.
The training opportunity is designed to assist filmmakers who would like to fine-tune their documentary projects in development or production phase to be better prepared for pitching at forums around the world.
Every year the DFA is supported by the SA government’s Department of Trade & Industry (DTI) SASS scheme to lead delegations of filmmakers to major documentary markets and festivals around the world. In recent years the DFA has sent delegations to Visions du Réel (Switzerland), IDFA (the Netherlands), Hot Docs (Canada) among others. In June this year a DFA group will attend the prestigious Sheffield Doc/Fest in the UK.
Co-ordinator of the Training Workshops in both Johannesburg and Cape Town, is DFA Board Member Sylvia Vollenhoven, veteran documentary producer and director. “When applying to be part of a future DFA delegation Doc Tour workshop participants will be given priority”.
Renowned trainers Nadine Cloete, Jonathan Cumming, Kethiwe Ngcobo, Francois Verster and Sylvia Vollenhoven will provide in-depth input on how to get concepts market-ready for buyers, funders and broadcasters, storytelling that appeals to international audiences as well as budgets and finance plans.
“The applicants were generally of a high standard. The submissions came from a wide variety of professionals, mostly young people, with varying levels of experience which will make for a very dynamic training experience and exchanges among the participants” says Vollenhoven.
